چکیده

We present a new theory of rodlike polyelectrolyte solutions. It is found that at low densities, and below teInperature T~i, the counterions associate with the polyions forIning clusters consisting of one polyion and n counterions. The distribution of du8ters sizes is Gaussian, leading to strong logarithmic corrections to the liIniting laws obtained by Manning. In the Inathelnatical limit of infinite dilution the distribution of the cluster sizes approaches a delta function centered on the value postulated by Manning. Above Tci the solution consists of free (unassociated) counterions and polyions, and the liIniting laws reInain unaffected. Finally, unlike soIne recent suggestions, we denlonstrate that the counterion condensation is distinct fron1the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. In fact, the association phenoInena inside a polyelectrolyte solution can be coInpared to a fornlation of nlicelles in anlphiphilic systenls. There is, however, an iInportant difference. While the aInphiphilic rnicelles can be diluted

Counterion structure and dynamics in polyelectrolyte solutions

Investigations of the counterion distribution and correlations to polyelectrolytes have seen increased activity to understand intrinsically stiff and flexible polyelectrolytes in good solvents as functions of ionic strength, charge valence, and concentration. In particular, anomalous (resonant) small-angle X-ray scattering and small-angle neutron scattering have provided new insights on counter...

Effective charges of polyelectrolytes in a salt-free solution based on counterion chemical potential.

The phenomenon of counterion condensation around a flexible polyelectrolyte chain with N monomers is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations in terms of the degree of ionization alpha, which is proportional to the effective charge. It is operationally defined as the ratio of observed to intrinsic counterion concentration, alpha = co/ci. The observed counterion concentration in the dilute polyel...

Osmotic Properties of Charged Cylinders: Critical Evaluation of Counterion Condensation Theory

The osmotic coefficient of B-DNA in water may, in moderately dilute solutions, deviate as much as 100 % from predictions based on a simple ’counterion condensation’ theory. We determine the results for osmotic properties via a cell model description of the ionic atmosphere near a cylindrical polyelectrolyte. The cell model predictions for the osmotic properties disagree with predictions based o...

Integral equation theory approach to rodlike polyelectrolytes: Counterion condensation

We investigate the structural properties of rigid linear polyelectrolytes in dilute and semidilute solutions using an integral equation theory. The Polymer Reference Interaction Site Model together with the Reference Laria Wu Chandler Closure is solved numerically taking the counterions into account explicitly. The counterions and the polymer chains, modeled as linearly connected, charged hard ...

Mechanism of Chain Collapse of Strongly Charged Polyelectrolytes.

We perform extensive molecular dynamics simulations of a charged polymer in a good solvent in the regime where the chain is collapsed. We analyze the dependence of the gyration radius R_{g} on the reduced Bjerrum length ℓ_{B} and find two different regimes. In the first one, called a weak electrostatic regime, R_{g}∼ℓ_{B}^{-1/2}, which is consistent only with the predictions of the counterion-f...
